Old scratchy towels can be revived with a simple washing trick that swaps fabric softener for white vinegar, a staple costing around 30p a bottle. The Fine Cotton Company, which specialises in luxury towels and linens, recommends using white vinegar to break down the residue that leaves towels feeling hard and less absorbent.
Why towels turn scratchy
Towels lose their softness over time as detergent, fabric conditioner and other residues build up in the fibres, leaving them stiff and rough. The vinegar helps tackle this accumulated residue, restoring a softer feel.
To try the trick, put towels into the washing machine without overloading the drum, as bulky towels need enough room to move freely. Instead of fabric softener, wash them on a hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar.
What the experts advise
The experts advised against using any other fabric detergents, softeners or conditioners during this wash, saying the towels will be much “softer” after. For towels that are repeatedly stiff because fabric conditioner is used every wash, this step can help revive them.
White vinegar can also help with smelly towels, as can baking soda. If the weather allows, drying towels outside in the sun adds extra freshness and softness.
Washing and drying tips
“Most towels are made from cotton and can be washed on a cycle up to 60°C,” the experts said. “Using hot water is the most hygienic option, as this will ensure that the towels are cleaned thoroughly. High heat is more effective at removing dirt and breaking down any potential mould or bacteria.”
Colder temperatures extend towel life, and washing at 30°C can save money on energy bills, so it is important to check the towels’ care labels to make the right decision. When using a tumble dryer, avoid setting it to high temperature, as it can damage the fibres. The experts also advised avoiding dryer sheets: “They contain oils similar to those found in fabric softeners and can result in hardness.”
