Carlos Alcaraz Defies Parents with Kangaroo Tattoo After Historic Australian Open Win

Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis sensation, is set to commemorate his historic Australian Open victory with a kangaroo tattoo, despite his parents' reservations about his body art. At just 22 years old, Alcaraz became the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand Slam after winning in Melbourne in January, rallying from a set down to defeat Novak Djokovic 3-1 and adding the title to his previous US Open, Wimbledon, and French Open triumphs.

A Promise Kept: The Kangaroo Tattoo Plan

The remarkable feat netted Alcaraz just over £2 million in prize money, and he has now revealed his intention to honour a promise made prior to the tournament. Speaking at the Australian Open a year earlier, Alcaraz discussed getting a tattoo if he were to win, specifically mentioning a kangaroo design. He has now confirmed this remains his plan, stating, "I already know it's going to be a kangaroo. I just don't know the place. I'm just thinking about the leg but I don't know which calf, whether it will be the right or left one."

Parental Disapproval and Alcaraz's Tattoo Tradition

Alcaraz's parents are understood not to be keen on their son's body art, a sentiment he has navigated before. After his Wimbledon triumph in 2024, he admitted to somewhat deceiving them about how regularly he was getting inked, having already been tattooed following his SW19 victory the previous year. He said at the time, "I told my parents just to calm them that it was just the first one in every major. But this is a really big moment. Probably I'm going to put the date of this one next to last year's. This one, I have to talk with them. A little one I can hide."

Alcaraz's Growing Collection of Tattoos

Alcaraz has maintained a tradition of getting tattoos to commemorate his major victories. After winning his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open in 2022, he had the date "11.09.22" tattooed on his left arm. When he claimed the same title in 2025, he added the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty to the same arm. He also sports a Wimbledon-inspired tattoo, featuring a strawberry and the date of his 2023 victory inked just above his right ankle, with the date of his second triumph added alongside it a year later. In 2024, he had the Eiffel Tower tattooed on his left leg, accompanied by the date of his Paris victory.

Strategy for Avoiding Issues

Explaining his approach to managing his tattoos and his parents' concerns, Alcaraz told Marca, "I choose a discreet location. I'm not going to get one on my face or in the middle of my thigh, or anything like that. And they're relatively small tattoos, medium-sized. That's why they don't raise any red flags. It's under control." Despite his parents clearly not being thrilled, a kangaroo is set to be added to his collection, marking his latest achievement in a career that has already made history.
