Aaron Rai has credited his wife, professional golfer Gaurika Bishnoi, for helping him secure England’s first PGA Championship victory in 107 years. The 31-year-old from Wolverhampton clinched the title at Aronimink, earning $3,690,000 and a lifetime exemption to the tournament. Despite the life-changing win, Rai kept celebrations low-key, planning a visit to his favorite burrito chain, Chipotle.
Historic Achievement
Rai became the first Englishman to win the PGA Championship since 1919, a fact he only discovered on Saturday night. Reflecting on the achievement, he said: "There have been many incredible English players over the past century who achieved phenomenal things. To be the first from England to win this event in such a long time is amazing and something to be extremely proud of."
Key Support from Wife
Rai dedicated the victory to Bishnoi, emphasizing her crucial role. "I’m not exaggerating when I say I wouldn’t be here without her," he stated. "She’s a professional golfer herself, so her mindset, advice, and thoughts on technique and composure are absolutely invaluable. We had a 30-minute conversation in the car on Saturday night, and her words stayed with me throughout the final round."

Navigating one of the most congested leaderboards in major golf history required intense concentration. Rai admitted he avoided looking at the leaderboard. "I knew many players were close, but regardless of the bunched field, a strong round was necessary. The course was punishing; you couldn't lose focus for a split second on any shot."

As a child, Rai repeatedly watched VHS tapes of Tiger Woods' early triumphs. "We watched them two or three times a week," he recalled. "Woods is an icon I idolized. Seeing my name alongside his on this trophy is incredible."
