Manchester United are planning to sign five new players this summer after agreeing a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who will become the first arrival of the Michael Carrick era. The club has returned to the Champions League and, after playing only 40 games last season, recognises the need to strengthen the squad for increased demands.
According to reports, a deal worth an initial £35 million has been struck for the Brazilian star. In addition, United are interested in Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes, and Brighton's Carlos Baleba. Elliot Anderson has also been linked, but Manchester City are leading the race for his signature.
A striker is a priority after confirming Rasmus Hojlund's permanent departure from Old Trafford. A left-back is also being considered, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall identified as a potential target. The club's hierarchy and Carrick are committed to maintaining a pathway for young players from the academy, a tradition Carrick strongly supports.
Carrick, appointed in January, quickly reintegrated Kobbie Mainoo into the first team, and the club wants to see more young talent like Shea Lacey given opportunities. The manager's appointment was well received by academy families, who believe he will be more open to promoting prospects than his predecessor, Ruben Amorim.
United are also expected to see several major names leave to free up squad places and raise funds. Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford, and Andre Onana are available for transfer, while Casemiro has left after his contract expired. Jadon Sancho, who spent an unspectacular season on loan at Aston Villa, will also depart on a free transfer.
