UK Powerball Offers £1 Billion Jackpot with 30-Year Payout

UK Powerball Launch Promises £1 Billion Jackpot with Unique Payout Terms

The National Lottery operator Allwyn has announced a groundbreaking new draw that will link British players with America's iconic Powerball game, creating the potential for a staggering £1 billion jackpot. This marks the first time Powerball has been available outside the United States, representing a major expansion for the lottery giant.

How the UK Powerball Will Work

The new draw will take place three times weekly, offering players the chance to win life-changing amounts starting from at least £12 million. Unlike traditional National Lottery draws, there will be no limit to the number of roll-overs if no one wins the jackpot, allowing the prize to potentially soar to unprecedented heights.

However, there's a significant catch: Unlike most National Lottery winners who receive their tax-free cash immediately, Powerball jackpot winners will receive their prize over a 30-year period. For the potential £1 billion top prize, this would translate to more than £30 million annually for three decades. Should a winner pass away before receiving the full amount, the remainder would be paid to their estate.

Ticket Details and Odds

UK Powerball tickets will cost £4 per line, making it the most expensive National Lottery draw in history. This compares to the $2 price in the United States, with Allwyn attributing the higher cost to more lower-tier prizes in the UK version. For instance, matching just two main numbers will win a fixed prize of £8, while five main numbers could secure £1 million.

Players will select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, or opt for a Lucky Dip random selection. Draws will occur on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays around 4am from the Powerball studio in Florida, with tickets available online or in stores until 11:55pm the night before each draw.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot remain daunting at approximately 292 million to one, as UK players will compete against participants from 48 US state lotteries.

Historic Powerball Winners and UK Lottery Changes

The biggest Powerball winner to date remains Edwin Castro, who won just over $2 billion on the California state lottery in November 2022. The 31-year-old opted for a lump sum payment that reduced his after-tax prize to just under $1 billion, which he reportedly used to purchase luxury properties and support his wildfire-affected hometown.

This Powerball launch coincides with significant changes to the main UK Lotto draw, the biggest overhaul since its 1994 introduction. Starting June 7, every £2 Lotto line will offer two chances to win with a new two-round format, improving players' odds of winning any prize from 1-in-9.3 to 1-in-4.9. This change is expected to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires from around 140 to approximately 345 annually.

Industry Perspective and Future Outlook

Allwyn chief executive Andria Vidler stated: "We are delivering on our promise to bring more games, more entertainment and more innovation to The National Lottery. Lotto has always been the best game to play if you want to become a millionaire. Our new Lotto gives players two chances of winning £1 million-plus for the same £2 they spend on each Lotto line today."

Regarding the Powerball launch, Vidler added: "With its transformative jackpots, which will be paid to UK winners over time, we're certain that our UK-specific version of the iconic Powerball game will really capture the UK public's imagination."

The exact launch date for UK Powerball remains to be confirmed, but the announcement represents a major development in British gambling entertainment, potentially creating the country's first billion-pound lottery winner under unique payment terms that differ significantly from traditional National Lottery prizes.
