UK National Lottery Unveils £1 Billion Powerball Game in Historic Shake-Up
The National Lottery is poised to launch a groundbreaking new £1 billion mega jackpot game, marking the most significant transformation of its UK prize offerings in decades. Operator Allwyn will introduce the globally renowned Powerball game format later this year, providing players with an unprecedented opportunity to win colossal jackpots starting from £12 million and potentially soaring to £1 billion or beyond.
Powerball Comes to the UK for the First Time
Powerball, celebrated as the world's largest jackpot game, will make its debut outside the United States with this initiative. Draws are scheduled to occur every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, creating a thrilling weekly routine for participants. To enter, players must pay £4 per line, competing alongside their American counterparts for a share of the monumental jackpot, which will be disbursed over a 30-year period for UK winners.
How the Game Works and Prize Structure
The gameplay mirrors traditional Lotto formats: participants select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. For those preferring random selections, a lucky dip option is available. Matching all five main numbers plus the Powerball secures the jackpot, beginning at approximately £12 million. If no winner emerges, the jackpot rolls over to the next draw, accumulating to reach the £1 billion threshold. Additional prizes include £1 million for matching five main numbers and £8 for matching just two, ensuring multiple winning tiers.
Major Overhaul and Enhanced Player Benefits
This launch represents the most extensive overhaul of the National Lottery's draw-based games since its inception in 1994. From June 7, players will enjoy two chances to win with every £2 ticket, a change expected to more than double the annual number of Lotto millionaires from around 140 to about 345. The inaugural two-round draw is set for Wednesday, June 10, with regular Lotto draws continuing at 8pm every Saturday and Wednesday.
Technological Upgrades and Leadership Vision
Allwyn recently completed a £450 million technological upgrade, migrating 18 million player records and over three billion historical transactions to new platforms while modernising retail partner systems. Allwyn Chief Executive Andria Vidler emphasised the company's commitment to innovation, stating, 'We are delivering on our promise to bring more games, more entertainment, and more innovation to The National Lottery.' She highlighted that with digital and retail enhancements now complete, a fantastic summer lineup awaits players.
Boost for Good Causes and Future Goals
The new Powerball game is projected to allocate over 30% of ticket prices to good causes, generating an estimated £1 billion extra over the first five years. This initiative supports Allwyn's ambitious target to double weekly returns to good causes from £30 million to £60 million by 2034, with current contributions standing at £33 million weekly. Vidler added, 'By offering a wide range of complementary games, we're ensuring there is something for everyone—returning the magic, building our player base, and making sure The National Lottery remains part of the national conversation.'
