Crystal Palace etched their name into the history books on Wednesday night, but for one player, the achievement was even more personal as he carved his name into European football folklore.
Historic Victory for the Eagles
The Eagles secured the Europa Conference League title by defeating Spanish side Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Leipzig. Jean-Philippe Mateta's goal in the 50th minute proved decisive, handing Palace their first major European trophy.
Evann Guessand entered the fray in the 80th minute, helping to see out the threat posed by the LaLiga opponents. His contribution was part of a memorable night for the London club.
A Unique Double Achievement
Guessand, 24, made history by becoming the first footballer to win two European competitions with two different clubs in the same season. Having joined Palace on loan from Aston Villa in January, his parent club had won the Europa League final just a week earlier.
With UEFA awarding 50 gold medals to each winning team, Guessand stands a chance of collecting both medals for his efforts across the two campaigns.
- At Aston Villa, the Ivory Coast international played seven times in the Europa League, scoring twice.
- Since moving to Palace, he has featured six times in the Europa Conference League, scoring once.
Guessand's loan at Selhurst Park includes an option for a permanent transfer, meaning his future could be secured with the Eagles after this historic season.
