In a harrowing encounter off the coast of Western Australia, prison officer Allan Oppert survived a brutal great white shark attack that could have cost him his life. The incident occurred during a routine diving trip near Binningup, a small seaside town in the state's south-west.
Oppert, 42, was on his third dive of the day when he spotted the massive shark inside a underwater crater known as 'the crater', a popular crayfish diving spot. Despite the animal's aggressive posture, Oppert remained calm, later recalling that he did not think about dying.
The shark struck with incredible speed, pulling his face mask down and clamping its jaws around both his legs. Oppert managed to keep his regulator in place and clear his mask, giving him a terrifying view of the shark's gills. He credits his steel speargun, which was positioned across his thigh, with preventing the shark from severing his legs.
After releasing its grip, Oppert's inflated buoyancy vest shot him to the surface, where he raised the alarm and was rescued. The attack occurred just four years after a fatal shark incident on a nearby suburban beach, highlighting the ongoing risks in the region.
