NSW stun Queensland in State of Origin 2026 decider

New South Wales produced a commanding performance to defeat Queensland 34-10 in the State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night, sealing a 2-1 series victory on hostile territory.

Early dominance sets the tone

Nathan Cleary was instrumental from the opening whistle, scoring the first try and orchestrating the Blues' attack with precision. His efforts earned him the prestigious Wally Lewis medal as player of the series. Cleary's early try, where he powered past Kalyn Ponga, set the stage for a comprehensive victory.

Stephen Crichton also played a key role, combining with Cleary to celebrate NSW's hot start. The Blues' forward pack, led by Payne Haas, dominated the physical battle, with Haas leaving Maroons players tumbling in his wake.

Queensland fight back but NSW hold firm

Queensland managed to get on the scoreboard in the 35th minute through Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, giving the home crowd a brief moment of hope. However, NSW responded quickly, with Cameron Murray adding a try and Cleary converting from beneath the posts to extend the lead.

Jack Bostock made a promising debut for the Blues, running clear of Harry Grant's dive, but his night was cut short in the second half after a fall on his head. Bradman Best also scored a controversial try after what appeared to be a knock-on from Bostock, but the decision stood.

Second half: Blues seal the series

Selwyn Cobbo scored early in the second half for Queensland, but NSW maintained control. Cleary's kicking game, ably supported by Mitchell Moses, kept the Maroons pinned in their own half. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Cleary kicked a penalty to put the result beyond doubt, and Hudson Young added a final try after the siren to cap a dominant performance.

The victory sparked wild celebrations, with Blues coach Laurie Daley doused in ice water by Crichton. Captain Isaah Yeo held the State of Origin shield aloft as NSW claimed the series 2-1.
