Travellers have parked their caravans on council-owned sports pitches in Bridgend, prompting legal action from the local authority. The illegal encampment appeared at Litchard playing fields on Monday, June 15, with 13 caravans and around 20 cars occupying the site.
Club Expresses Frustration
Litchard FC, based at the playing fields, said the "sight of caravans, motorhomes and vehicles spread across our playing fields has left many of our members frustrated and disappointed." The vehicles first arrived on Monday, with locals reporting a large number of caravans. Police and council officers have attended the site to speak with the Travellers.
In a video shared with WalesOnline, dogs can be seen running around the field and barking. It is believed the Travellers gained access through a broken bollard, which local councillor Martin Williams said had been reported to the council over a month ago.
Council Begins Legal Process
Bridgend council confirmed it has started a legal process to move the caravans on after attending the site to speak with vehicle owners. Officers are also liaising closely with South Wales Police. The council stated it will carry out an inspection of the site once the caravans have been removed.
Cllr Gary Haines, Bridgend council cabinet member for communities and environment, said: "Soon after the caravans gained access to the playing fields, the council started the process of preparing to take action to ensure they vacate the site. Local authorities are legally required to undertake mandatory checks and welfare assessments in circumstances such as this, and the council is liaising with the travelling community to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. I want to reassure residents that we are monitoring the situation closely, and that the process for the safe removal of the caravans has already started."
Impact on Young Players
Litchard FC said its primary concern is the disruption to the hundreds of children and young people who play at the club. The current situation "is preventing many young players from accessing the pitches and participating in their regular football activities." The club is assessing contingency plans, including alternative training venues, should the disruption continue.
The club added: "Our focus remains on protecting a community facility that serves local children, families and residents, while ensuring that football activities can continue in a safe, positive and structured environment."
The playing fields are a valued part of the local community, regularly used by residents. The club acknowledged concerns from local families and neighbours regarding access, increased traffic, noise, and the wider effect on the community.
Litchard FC thanked members, volunteers, parents, local residents, and supporters for their patience and understanding during this challenging time. South Wales Police has been approached for comment.
