Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt claims he has been banned from his local recycling centre after a heated confrontation with staff. The 51-year-old, who made over 270 appearances for the Red Devils as part of the Class of 92, has enjoyed a successful media career since retiring from football in 2011.
Despite his legendary status at United, Butt still faces everyday chores like taking rubbish to the tip. However, he now needs to find a new recycling centre after being barred from his usual one following a blazing row with staff.
Commercial vehicle dispute
According to Butt, the argument began when staff deemed his Range Rover a commercial vehicle and refused him entry. He told The Sun: "There's this guy at the gate bit, and he flags me down and goes, 'Put your windows down I need to look in the back of your car'. I'm going, 'What for?'"
"I've got a lot of crap from the house, bit of cardboard... I missed the bin man last week, so I've got a few smelly bags. So I put the windows down, obviously my seats were down and apparently I'm not going in because it's a commercial van."
Butt added: "So I'm raging, literally. I'm putting a bit of cardboard in the tip."
Chase up the ramp
He also claimed staff suspected he was trying to smuggle rubbish into the facility because of the blacked-out windows on his Range Rover. "I thought, well, I'm there now, I'm gonna go for it," he said.
"So I've got up the ramp, I see this bloke getting up... Trying to chase me up the hill, but he's got his walkie-talkie out. So I've literally got up the top, throw all the bags out, and I'm going back down the hill, and he's going mad at me. Anyway, I'm banned from the tip."
Career highlights
Butt was a key part of the United squad in the 1990s, winning six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League before moving to Newcastle in 2004. He spent six years at St James' Park, including a loan spell at Birmingham City, before ending his career in China.
Since retiring, he has held various roles at United and owned a stake in Salford City, where he served as CEO from 2022 to 2024.
