Alejandro Garnacho's career has reached a critical juncture after a difficult spell at Manchester United and a loan move to Aston Villa. The 22-year-old winger, who joined Chelsea for £40 million in the 2025/26 campaign, scored just one goal in 24 Premier League games last season—the worst of his career—and was deemed surplus to requirements under Xabi Alonso this summer.
Garnacho's loan at Villa is seen as a make-or-break opportunity, with the player told he cannot ignore the magnitude of his stint if he wants to reignite his standing in the game. Former Villa midfielder Ray Houghton has urged Garnacho's family to make him understand that he won't continue to get chances at the highest level.
Houghton warns of alarm bells
Speaking to GOAL, Houghton said: "I've got every respect for the kid, but I think the alarm bells should be ringing. His closest people, his family and friends, should be telling him that. What they should be saying to him is: 'Look where you've been, look what's happened to you and look where you are now, there's a reason this is happening, and it's down to you now.'"
He added: "This is another club that's going to give you a chance. You've got to seize it. No more excuses. No more saying, 'Oh well, there's something else at that club and someone else at that club.' That's all gone now. It's down to the individual now."
Garnacho has played just 16 minutes in Villa's opening two games this season. Houghton predicted that Villa boss Unai Emery will give the winger "tough love," but warned he will be cast aside if he doesn't deliver.
Fernandes' past criticism resurfaces
Questions about Garnacho's attitude date back to his teenage years, with Bruno Fernandes publicly criticizing him in November 2022. Speaking to BT Sport, Fernandes said: "He was good, but he knows we expect a lot from him. He's still really young, doing really well. At the beginning of the season, he was not at his best. On the [pre-season] tour, he did not have the best attitude. That's why he didn't get his chance until now. He's getting his chances because he's training better, he's having the correct attitude."
Garnacho spent two years in United's academy before his breakout 2022/23 season under Erik ten Hag. His form has declined since the Ruben Amorim era at Old Trafford, with a lack of end product and criticisms of his decision-making plaguing his recent seasons.
