Folarin Balogun became a national hero for the United States after scoring twice in their 4-1 World Cup victory over Paraguay. However, just a few years ago, the striker dreamed of playing for England instead.
Balogun's Journey to the USMNT
Born in New York while his parents were visiting from London, Balogun was raised in England and came through Arsenal's academy. He made only a handful of senior appearances for the Gunners before a prolific loan spell at Reims earned him a £26 million transfer to Monaco in 2023. The 24-year-old has continued to thrive in France, scoring 19 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions last season.
Before his transfer to Monaco, Balogun made a momentous decision to switch his international allegiance from England to the United States. He was eligible to play for Nigeria, England, and the USA due to his heritage. Initially, he represented England at youth levels, scoring seven goals in 13 appearances for the Under-21 side. He also played four times for the US Under-18 team and expressed interest in playing for Nigeria.
Why Did Balogun Switch to the USA?
In March 2023, Balogun withdrew from an England Under-21 squad and flew to Orlando to meet with the USMNT squad and interim manager Anthony Hudson. After conversations with key players like Christian Pulisic and Matt Turner, he decided to join the Stars and Stripes, making his senior debut in July 2023.
Balogun described the decision as a 'no-brainer,' saying his family was thrilled, especially his mother. He cited the support from US fans as a motivating factor. The move may have been influenced by limited opportunities with England, where Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins were established, and Nigeria, which had several top strikers like Victor Osimhen.
Proving His Decision Right
After his standout performance against Paraguay, Balogun emphasized his commitment to the USMNT. 'When I committed, the fans gave me so much motivation and support. I want to repay that and show them I made the right decision,' he said. Balogun will look to continue his form when the USA faces Australia in their next Group D match.
