Dutch media have criticised Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo for their performances in the Netherlands' 2-2 draw with Japan in their World Cup 2026 opener. Despite scoring, Van Dijk was labelled 'sloppy', while Gakpo also faced flak. Ryan Gravenberch, however, was spared criticism after providing two assists.
Match Recap
Group F kicked off on Sunday as the Netherlands faced Japan in Dallas. After a goalless first half, Liverpool captain Van Dijk headed home from a Gravenberch cross in the 51st minute to give the Dutch the lead. Gakpo joined his teammates in celebration. However, Japan equalised minutes later through Keito Nakamura's long-range effort. Gravenberch turned provider again for West Ham's Crysencio Summerville, but Koki Ogawa's deflected header ensured the points were shared.
Van Dijk's Performance Under Fire
Despite his goal, Van Dijk was criticised for his defensive display. Publication AD gave him a 6/10, noting: 'In the first half, he was sloppy in his passing and somewhat clumsy in defence, when Ayase Ueda briefly escaped his attention.' De Telegraaf also questioned his leadership, with head of football Valentijn Driessen stating: 'Van Dijk denies everything. If I were Virgil van Dijk, the captain and leader, I would look at myself first. He always blames someone else, while he himself is not blameless regarding that last goal.'
Gravenberch Shines
Gravenberch received a 7/10 from AD, with the report praising his contributions: 'Gravenberch pulled the Netherlands out of a dead end. His good through ball to Summerville didn't result in a goal, but his well-placed cross to Van Dijk did. For 2-1, Gravenberch also acted as the provider.' De Telegraaf hailed his 'excellent cross' for the first goal and described his move for the second as 'magnificent', adding that he 'came into his own' in a more advanced position.
Gakpo's Mixed Display
Gakpo was rated 5.5/10 by AD, with the publication stating: 'The Netherlands' top scorer at recent major tournaments played a poor second half and a decent first. Gakpo initially barely got involved. After the break, he did have a few good actions, but the attacker could not (yet) shake off the tough year at Liverpool at the World Cup.'
The Dutch now face a crucial match in their next group game as they look to bounce back from the disappointing draw.
