Darts Star Dom Taylor Handed Six-Month Ban After Second Failed Drugs Test
Darts Pro Banned Six Months for Failed Drugs Test

Professional darts player Dom Taylor has been suspended from the sport for six months following a second failed drugs test, this time during the prestigious World Darts Championship.

Tournament Disqualification and Ban Confirmed

The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) imposed the mandatory half-year ban after Taylor tested positive for both cocaine and cannabis. The samples were taken during his campaign at Alexandra Palace in December 2025, leading to his immediate disqualification from the tournament and all Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events.

As a direct consequence, Taylor was forced to forfeit the £25,000 prize money he had earned for his first-round victory over Oskar Lukasiak. The disciplinary committee confirmed that his ingestion of the substances occurred out of competition, prior to the championship's start on 11th December 2025.

A Repeat Offence Under DRA Rules

This incident marked Taylor's second violation of anti-doping rules. He had previously served a one-month ban in 2025 after a failed test at the Players Championship Finals. That initial two-year suspension was reduced after he completed a substance abuse treatment programme.

Because this was a subsequent offence, the DRA applied a compulsory six-month sanction under UK Anti-Doping Rules 10.9 (a) and 10.9 (b). The ruling also led to Taylor losing his coveted PDC Tour Card earlier this month, severely impacting his ability to compete at the highest level.

Public Apology and Personal Trauma Revealed

Following his disqualification, Taylor issued a heartfelt public apology on social media, expressing deep remorse for his actions and for "blatant lying" in a post-match interview. He directed his apologies to his family, friends, sponsors, management, and fans.

In his statement, Taylor opened up about significant personal trauma from his early teens, which he cited as a contributing factor, though not an excuse, for his relapse. He described finding his deceased grandmother at age twelve, followed closely by his brother suffering a 45-minute non-responsive heart attack and the death of a close friend from a brain tumour.

He also revealed that the recent anniversary of his daughter's death had severely impacted his mental health, leading him to turn back to substances as a coping mechanism. "I have let many people down to say the least," Taylor wrote, emphasising his regret at disappointing his two daughters and his family.

The DRA's decisive action underscores the strict anti-doping stance within professional darts, with repeat offences triggering significant mandatory penalties that can derail a player's career.
