Chris Froome has been airlifted to hospital in France after suffering a collapsed lung, a broken back, and five broken ribs during a training crash. The four-time Tour de France winner is stable and did not sustain any head injuries, his team confirmed.
The 40-year-old Israel-Premier Tech rider will undergo surgery in Toulon on Thursday following the incident on Wednesday. A statement posted on Froome's X account said no other cyclists or vehicles were involved in the crash.
Scans revealed a pneumothorax, five broken ribs, and a lumbar vertebrae fracture, for which he will undergo surgery later today. The team said Froome is now stable and that no one else was injured.
This is the second serious training crash of Froome's career. In 2019, he was left in intensive care after a high-speed crash during a reconnaissance ride at the Critérium du Dauphiné, fracturing his right femur, hip, elbow, and ribs.
Froome, who is out of contract at the end of the year, is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season due to his injuries.
