Ben Stokes Expected to Return as England Captain for Third Test
Ben Stokes Expected Back as England Captain Next Week

Ben Stokes is expected to return as England captain for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge next week, following his absence from the second Test due to a breach of team protocols. The all-rounder has returned to action for Durham in the County Championship against Northamptonshire on Friday, signaling his readiness to rejoin the national squad.

Nightclub Incident and Fallout

Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were dropped from the second Test at The Oval after visiting a nightclub in the early hours of the morning following England's win in the first Test at Lord's. The incident involved a punch thrown by a Saracens rugby player that struck a security guard. Both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Cricket Regulator have conducted investigations into the events at The Rex Rooms nightclub.

Despite initial speculation that Stokes could be sacked or resign as captain, Sky Sports reports that he is now expected to lead the team again for the third Test starting Thursday. Stokes has been given time to consider his position and is currently playing for Durham, while Atkinson is representing Surrey against Glamorgan.

Team Culture Under Scrutiny

The incident has raised questions about England's team culture, particularly after a midnight curfew was implemented following a boozy Ashes tour. Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum, and director of cricket Rob Key retained their roles after an ECB review of the 4-1 defeat in Australia. However, the recent events have prompted Key to consider a complete ban on alcohol for players.

Speaking before the second Test, McCullum expressed concern for Stokes' welfare and refrained from confirming his return as captain. "Our concern is with Ben, our concern is handling that situation, making sure we look after him, that he feels supported by us and in communication with us," said McCullum. "Those other things will work out down the line." It now appears that those matters are being resolved.

Details of the Incident

After Atkinson bowled England to a 115-run victory over New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday, a group of players went to the White Horse pub in Parson's Green, where they drank alongside Saracens players celebrating the end of their season. The pub closed at 11pm, after which Stokes and Atkinson proceeded to The Rex Rooms nightclub with a member of ECB security. In the early hours of Monday, a Saracens player threw a punch at Atkinson but struck the security guard instead.

Stokes was instrumental in establishing the midnight curfew, which was introduced after Harry Brook was fined £30,000 by the ECB for being punched by a bouncer while drinking the night before an ODI in New Zealand on October 31.
