Controversy Overshadows Boxing Day Build-Up
The England team's preparation for the crucial Boxing Day Test in Melbourne has been dominated by reports of excessive drinking during their mid-series break in Noosa. The controversy escalated when managing director Rob Key announced an investigation into the squad's alcohol intake. Shortly after, unverified footage circulated on social media appearing to show an inebriated Duckett in a tense exchange with members of the public.
Speaking ahead of the Melbourne Test, Stokes, drawing on his own well-documented past struggles, positioned himself as a protective shield for his players. "My main concern right now is my players and how I handle this moment is the most important thing to me," Stokes stated. He emphasised his role was to "protect my players as much as I possibly can" and ensure they were in the right mental space to perform.
Stokes Draws on Personal Experience
The England skipper, who has faced his own career challenges including a mental health break in 2021, revealed he had personally reached out to Duckett. "I just reassured him that I'm not saying that for the sake of it. Just please come to me because I know what it's like. It's not a nice place to be," Stokes explained, detailing their private conversation.
