England's Josh Tongue Ruled Out of India Test Series Due to Injury – Chris Woakes Steps In
Josh Tongue ruled out of England's India Test series

England's fast bowling options have taken a hit as Josh Tongue has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against India due to injury. The 25-year-old seamer, who impressed during the Ashes last summer, will miss the five-match series starting later this month.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Tongue's withdrawal on Tuesday, citing ongoing rehabilitation from a persistent injury. In his place, experienced all-rounder Chris Woakes has been called up to bolster England's bowling attack.

Woakes Returns to Test Setup

Chris Woakes, who last played Test cricket in June 2022, brings valuable experience to the squad with his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. The 34-year-old Warwickshire player has taken 94 wickets in 45 Tests and could prove crucial in Indian conditions.

"While it's disappointing to lose Josh, we're fortunate to have someone of Chris's calibre available," said England's head coach Brendon McCullum. "His experience in subcontinent conditions will be invaluable to our group."

Tongue's Road to Recovery

Tongue, who made his Test debut against Ireland last year, had been pushing for a regular spot in England's red-ball setup. The Worcestershire bowler will now focus on his rehabilitation with hopes of returning for the county season.

The ECB medical team confirmed Tongue's injury isn't considered long-term but requires careful management. "We're taking a cautious approach with Josh's recovery to ensure he's fully fit for the summer schedule," said the team's lead physiotherapist.

Series Preparations Continue

England's squad will depart for India next week ahead of the first Test in Hyderabad beginning on January 25. The series forms part of the World Test Championship cycle and marks England's first tour of India since their 2021 defeat.

With Woakes' inclusion, England now have a balanced attack featuring both pace and spin options. The series promises to be a stern test of England's aggressive 'Bazball' approach against India's formidable home record.
