Jos Buttler has insisted he does not need to consider his future as England's white-ball captain, despite a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign ending with a 68-run defeat to India in the semi-finals. The England skipper admitted he needs time and space to review what was a hugely disappointing exit, but confirmed he wants to continue in the role.
England reached the knockout stage after a poor 50-over World Cup last winter, which had cast doubt on Buttler and coach Matthew Mott as a leadership pairing. However, the manner of the defeat in Guyana, where India's spinners dominated after Buttler chose to bowl first, may give team director Rob Key cause for concern. Buttler said he had no regrets about the toss but wished he had used Moeen Ali's off-spin more.
“At the moment, absolutely,” Buttler said when asked if the 2025 Champions Trophy was on his radar. “I am not thinking too far ahead... I am reflecting on the loss today. After a loss like that you are ready for a bit of space to take it in and process it so you can review not just this game but the last few months. There is lots of talent in the English game.”
India captain Rohit Sharma praised his team's adaptability after they set up a final meeting with South Africa in Barbados on Saturday. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav shared six wickets, while Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav put on a crucial 73-run stand. “It is very satisfying to win,” Sharma said. “Axar and Kuldeep are gun spinners.”
