Harry Brook makes history with England's first ODI double century
Harry Brook hits England's first ODI double century

Harry Brook became the first England batter to record a double century in one-day internationals as he powered his side to 429 for four in their tri-series contest in Rawalpindi.

Brook started cautiously as England looked to recover from their 87-run defeat to Pakistan in their opening match, collecting 13 from his first 24 balls. He hardly looked back after hitting part-time left-arm spinner Kamindu Mendis for two successive sixes.

Record-breaking innings

The Yorkshireman's expert use of the crease and dexterity saw him score runs all around the ground, with Sri Lanka increasingly powerless to stop him. He ran up 21 fours and 10 of England's 13 sixes.

Brook moved past Ben Stokes' England-best 182 in ODIs in the penultimate over and went to 200 off 114 balls – the fastest ever double hundred in this format – in the final over before holing out for 202 off the last ball of the innings.

England's highest overseas total

His 31 boundaries are an England ODI record, while England's total is their highest overseas against a Test-playing nation, surpassing the 418 for six they made against the West Indies in Grenada in 2019.

Brook put on 159 with Joe Root, who made 69, and 185 in just 79 balls alongside Will Jacks, unbeaten on 66 off just 30 deliveries. England added a staggering 156 in just the last 10 overs alone to leave Sri Lanka shellshocked.
