The England and Wales Cricket Board is to review punishments for pitch invaders after a man was arrested on suspicion of assault following a collision with Jonny Bairstow during the fourth Test against India at the Oval. The individual, who had previously invaded the pitch at Lord's and Headingley, ran onto the field in full cricket whites and attempted to bowl at England's Ollie Pope before barging into Bairstow at the non-striker's end.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man has been arrested and remains in custody. The ECB stated that any pitch invasion is completely unacceptable and that it works closely with venues to enhance security. Currently, trespassers can only be fined and banned from individual grounds, but the ECB is now reviewing these measures to prevent repeat offences.
The same individual had been fined £1,000 and banned from Lord's after an earlier invasion, and was also banned from Headingley. However, these penalties proved no deterrent, with his YouTube videos of the incidents generating nearly a million views each. His channel has 123,000 subscribers.
The incident has raised serious concerns about player safety and security lapses. Prominent Indian commentator Harsha Bogle called for sackings, describing it as a very serious security breach. The issue of stewarding has been highlighted, particularly after thousands of ticketless fans entered Wembley for the Euro 2020 final.
