Arsenal Confirm Per Mertesacker's Departure After Eight Years as Academy Manager
Per Mertesacker to leave Arsenal coaching role

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed a significant backroom change, with former defender and current academy chief Per Mertesacker set to leave his role at the end of the current campaign.

End of an Era for Club Legend

The German, who spent eight years as a first-team player before transitioning directly into the Academy Manager position, has been in the coaching role for a further eight years. His departure marks the end of a 16-year association with the North London club in varying capacities.

Mertesacker acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating the club holds a unique place for him. "Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me, so this was a difficult decision," he said in the club's official announcement.

Focus Remains on Strong Finish and Transition

Despite the impending departure, the 2014 World Cup winner emphasised his commitment to seeing out the season effectively. He pledged to continue nurturing the club's young talent and ensuring a smooth handover process.

"I am very thankful for the trust the club put in me when transitioning from a first-team player directly into the role as Head of Academy," Mertesacker added. "Now it is time for me to move on and explore something new and push myself even further. I remain focused on finishing the season strongly."

What Comes Next for Arsenal's Academy?

The announcement, made on 12th January 2026, leaves the club with several months to identify and appoint a successor to oversee the famed Hale End academy. Mertesacker's tenure has seen numerous academy graduates break into the first team, a legacy his replacement will be expected to continue and build upon.

His statement concluded with a promise to "support a seamless transition until my very last day with the club," suggesting plans for his exit are already being formulated behind the scenes at London Colney.
