Vernon Davis Denies Assault Allegations Involving Books

Former Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis has publicly addressed serious assault allegations made against him this week, following a criminal complaint filed by an unidentified woman. The retired NFL tight end, aged 41, is accused of physically attacking the woman at his residence during a dispute last May.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to legal documents obtained by media outlet TMZ, the woman alleges that Davis struck her with books and magazines during an argument on May 31st. The confrontation reportedly centred around her pregnancy, with the pair being in Davis's room when the disagreement escalated.

The complainant further claims that Davis abruptly ceased his alleged assault when she attempted to record the incident using her mobile phone. She states that the former San Francisco 49ers star subsequently offered her $10,000 following the altercation.

Additional Allegations and Legal Proceedings

The woman has described multiple incidents of alleged violence. She reports that another argument occurred on June 7th, just days after the initial dispute, during which she claims Davis slapped her face while they sat together on a couch and told her "not to question him."

In a conversation she reportedly recorded that same evening, Davis is said to have remarked, "If I really slapped you, your face would be blue/black."

Furthermore, the woman alleges there was a separate physical altercation with Davis prior to the May 31st incident, which left her with visible bruising. This occurred before she discovered she was pregnant, and she notes there remains an open strangulation and assault case regarding that matter.

An arrest warrant was issued for Davis on January 8th on charges of assault and battery. He is scheduled to appear in court next month to address these allegations.

Davis's Response and Career Background

Breaking his silence on Saturday, Davis shared a written statement via Instagram expressing his position. "I'm aware and saddened by the reporting and look forward to clearing my name," the former athlete stated. "For now, I'm staying focused on my life, my work, and the amazing people and partners who believe in and continue to support me. Your positivity means everything."

Davis was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as the sixth overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, following an impressive college football career with the Maryland Terrapins where he earned first-team All-American honours. After being traded to the Denver Broncos in 2015, he achieved the pinnacle of professional football by winning Super Bowl 50. He concluded his playing career with the Washington Redskins, retiring from the NFL in 2020 after four seasons with the team.

Post-NFL Career and Family Tragedy

Since retiring from professional football, Davis has transitioned into acting and various business ventures. His screen credits include roles in the crime thriller The Ritual Killer and comedy film Plan B. He has also appeared on television programmes including Dancing With The Stars and served as a judge on ABC's BattleBots and Fox's Domino Masters.

The athlete's family has experienced recent tragedy. His younger brother, Vontae Davis—who also enjoyed an NFL career with the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills—passed away in April 2024 at age 35. The former cornerback was found unresponsive at his home gym, with a medical examiner's report indicating his death resulted from a combination of substances. Vontae Davis had notably retired from professional football during halftime of a Bills game in 2018.

As legal proceedings develop, Vernon Davis maintains his innocence while continuing his work in entertainment and business, supported by partners and fans during this challenging period.
