In a brutal and physically costly championship bout, UFC contender Diego Lopes suffered the double agony of a title fight defeat and significant injuries, breaking both of his feet during his rematch against champion Alexander Volkanovski.
A Painful Sequel in Sydney
The main event of UFC 325 in Sydney on Saturday night saw Brazilian challenger Diego Lopes fall short once again in his quest to dethrone the dominant Australian featherweight king, Alexander Volkanovski. The 31-year-old Lopes, seeking revenge after a previous loss to Volkanovski in April of last year, entered the octagon with aggressive intent but left with a unanimous decision loss and two broken feet.
Volkanovski's Veteran Control
From the opening bell, the 37-year-old Volkanovski demonstrated his elite class and experience, controlling the pace and distance of the fight with a sharp jab. The champion's tactical prowess forced Lopes to second-guess his attacks throughout the contest. Although Volkanovski was briefly sent to the canvas in the third round, he rallied strongly in the championship rounds to secure a clear victory on the judges' scorecards.
The pivotal and painful moment for Lopes came midway through the fight. While attempting a body kick against Volkanovski, the Brazilian challenger succeeded in landing the strike but immediately showed signs of severe discomfort. Visibly compromised, Lopes struggled to move effectively for the remainder of the bout, a limitation that undoubtedly impacted his ability to mount a comeback.
Post-Fight Hospitalisation and Diagnosis
Immediately following the main event, Lopes was rushed to a Sydney hospital for assessment. The diagnosis delivered a crushing blow: fractures in both feet. His manager, Jason House of Iridium Sports Agency, personally escorted the fighter to the emergency room and later shared an update on social media.
House posted a photo to his Instagram story showing Lopes in a hospital bed, captioning it, "Looks like we broke both feet." He added philosophically, "Some nights you're at the afterparty, some nights you're at the ER. But every morning I give thanks for the opportunity to live this life with my best friends."
Fighter Reactions to a Tough Night
In his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, a gracious Lopes acknowledged his opponent's skill, stating, "I think Alexander Volkanovski is one of the best guys ever in the division. He made a lot of things in there round by round."
The victorious Volkanovski, while celebrating his successful title defence in front of a home crowd, admitted the challenges he faced. "It ain't getting any easier, I can tell you that," he said, referencing a difficult training camp. "The beauty is, as I always say, adversity is a privilege. I love it. Sometimes things go wrong and I am like 'let's go.' That's more of a challenge and that's what fires me up even more."
He paid respect to his injured opponent, noting, "You have got a young and hungry guy like that in there. Man, I wanted to take him out... but he was strong." Volkanovski also expressed satisfaction at securing a big win in Australia, exclaiming, "I got my moment here in Sydney!"
Other Notable Results from UFC 325
The event's main card featured several other significant bouts. In the lightweight division, Benoit Saint Denis continued his impressive rise with a brutal second-round knockout of a bloodied Dan Hooker. Mauricio Ruffy returned to the win column by stopping Rafael Fiziev in the second round, while Tallison Teixeira earned a unanimous decision victory over Tai Tuivasa. The main card opener saw rising prospect Quillan Salkilld make a major statement, forcing Jamie Mullarkey to submit via tapout in the very first round.
For Diego Lopes, the road to recovery will now be long, with the dual foot fractures marking a devastating physical and professional setback following his courageous but ultimately unsuccessful challenge for UFC gold.
