Tyson Fury Speaks Out on Fractured Relationship with Father John
Heavyweight boxing star Tyson Fury has publicly addressed the ongoing feud with his father, former boxer John Fury, stating there is "nothing he can do" to resolve their differences. The 37-year-old champion, known as 'The Gypsy King', confirmed they are currently not on speaking terms, with John having previously declared their relationship had been "destroyed completely" in recent years.
Father's Disapproval and Career Decisions
Fury revealed his father's dissatisfaction with his decision to continue boxing, particularly after choosing to exclude John from his training team before his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. Speaking ahead of his scheduled fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday night, Fury acknowledged his father's disapproval.
"My dad's not happy. He's not happy - he wanted me to retire in 2020 after I beat Deontay Wilder," Fury explained during an appearance on Good Morning Britain. "He doesn't want me to box. I suppose any parent wouldn't want their kid to continue to do something that they've done from being a little kid all the way to being an adult at the end of a sporting age."
Indifference About Father's Attendance
The boxing champion, who is married to childhood sweetheart Paris Fury and father to seven children, expressed remarkable indifference about whether his father attends his upcoming match. When questioned by hosts Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh about the possibility of John's attendance, Fury responded with characteristic bluntness.
"He might do, he might do. He might do! But he didn't come to the Usyk II fight I'm not holding my breath!" Fury stated. "My dad will do what my dad will do and there's nothing I can do about it. He is his own person and if he turns up - great. But if he doesn't - also great!"
Father's Perspective on the Relationship Breakdown
John Fury recently provided his own perspective on their fractured relationship during an interview with Playbook Boxing. The cornerman, who was instrumental in his son's early career development, emphasized that financial motives played no part in their estrangement.
"My relationship with Tyson is destroyed. Boxing destroyed it completely," John declared. "I'll say it on camera: I've never taken £10 off him in my life and I never will. I don't want Tyson's money and I don't need Tyson's money. Whatever he's got, good luck to him. But, don't forget who built his story when he was a kid. He didn't build it himself, did he? Me, his father."
Concerns About Fury's Current Form
John Fury also expressed serious concerns about his son's current boxing capabilities, suggesting that Tyson has been "past his best" since the Deontay Wilder fights. With characteristic directness, he predicted potential difficulties in the upcoming match against Makhmudov.
"I think he's past his best. I'm a no-filter kind of guy - I say it how I see it," John stated. "I love him, but there are too many people patting him on the back and telling him things that aren't true, building him up like he's invincible. He's not and he hasn't been for a while. Tyson has been gone since the Deontay Wilder fights, they finished him. Wilder completely done him. He's not got a leg underneath him."
The father went on to specifically address the upcoming challenge: "Makhmudov is a problem for Tyson. I am the first one to say it. Listen, I understand now that Tyson is testing himself. But, I can tell you now, his legs aren't there anymore. I understand the only way he will believe that and see that is when the first bell rings."
A Relationship That Has Fundamentally Changed
The public airing of this family dispute highlights the significant transformation in what was once a close father-son boxing partnership. For years, John Fury was a constant presence in his son's corner, providing guidance and support throughout Tyson's rise to heavyweight champion status.
However, recent decisions by Tyson to exclude his father from his professional team have created an apparently irreparable rift. With both parties now speaking publicly about their differences, and with Tyson expressing philosophical acceptance of the situation, it remains uncertain whether this boxing family will reconcile their differences in the foreseeable future.
