Boxing Champion Terence Crawford Fined for Careless Driving After Armed Police Stop
World champion boxer Terence Crawford has been found guilty of careless driving and ordered to pay a $75 fine, stemming from a traffic stop in Nebraska last year during which police ordered him and his passengers out of the vehicle at gunpoint. The incident occurred on September 28, just hours after his hometown of Omaha held a parade to celebrate his unanimous decision victory over Canelo Alvarez in a super middleweight championship fight.
Details of the Traffic Stop and Police Response
Officers stopped Crawford after observing a vehicle driving recklessly. During the stop, Crawford's head of security informed an officer by the front passenger window that he was carrying a legal firearm. Seconds later, an officer on the driver's side spotted a gun on the floorboard, leading to officers drawing their weapons and ordering everyone out of the vehicle. Crawford explained that he had leaned over to tell the officer on the passenger side about his own legal firearm, but the officer at the driver's side window did not hear him. Police later confirmed that all occupants were legally permitted to carry firearms, and Crawford was ticketed and released.
Internal Investigation and Legal Outcome
The stop prompted the Omaha police chief to conduct an internal investigation into the officers' actions. The chief concluded that the officers had acted lawfully during the incident. In addition to the $75 fine, Crawford was ordered to pay $49 in court costs. This legal outcome follows Crawford's retirement announcement in December, with an undefeated record of 42-0 and 31 knockouts, after becoming the first male boxer to capture three unified division titles.
