Australian boxing icon Shannan Taylor has disclosed that he is confronting the most formidable challenge of his life following a diagnosis of stage-four cancer. The former world title contender, famously nicknamed the 'Bulli Blaster', delivered the heartbreaking update in a deeply emotional message to his supporters, confirming the disease has metastasised to his liver and bowel.
A Fighter's Response to a Devastating Diagnosis
'I always wanted one more fight ... Well my fans, friends and family ... I got it,' Taylor wrote on his Facebook page. 'The doctors confirmed today that I have stage 4 cancer, it is in my liver and my bowel.' Despite the severity of the prognosis, the 53-year-old made it unequivocally clear that he intends to tackle this adversity with the same relentless spirit that defined his boxing career.
'So this will be the fight of my life, and I plan to attack it the same way I prepared for all my fights ... give my all. I don't know any other way,' he asserted. Taylor, who competed in 65 professional bouts and once challenged American superstar Shane Mosley for a world championship in Las Vegas, has long been celebrated for his indomitable toughness both inside and outside the ring. Now, he is channelling that very same resilience as he braces for an entirely different kind of contest.
Community Rallies with Fundraiser Plans
The Wollongong-born fighter also revealed that close friends Jamie Myer and 'Richo' are coordinating a special fundraising event in his honour, with arrangements progressing for a dedicated Shannan Taylor evening at the Bulli Workers Club. 'My great friend Jamie Myer and Richo are organising a fundraiser/Shannan Taylor night soon and hopefully it will be at Bulli Workers (TBA),' he explained. 'Any questions can be forwarded to Jamie or Richo but we don't know much yet and will keep you updated.' Taylor concluded his announcement by expressing gratitude: 'Thank you for all your support.'
Outpouring of Support from the Boxing World
The revelation prompted an immediate and overwhelming flood of solidarity from across the boxing fraternity and the broader sporting community, with admirers and fellow pugilists uniting behind the beloved figure. Former world champion Lovemore Ndou spearheaded the tributes, posting: 'My prayers are with you champ. That's terrible news but I know for a fact that if there is someone strong enough to beat this, it's you. God bless.'
Numerous others shared messages of encouragement, echoing Taylor's standing as one of the most tenacious competitors of his generation. 'Mate, feel like I've been hit with a shovel. That is terrible news, but they don't make them tougher than you champ,' one supporter wrote. Another added: 'Very sorry to be reading this post Shannan Taylor - The Bulli Blaster but I know you will give it your all with this fight. Kick cancer's ass.'
Several individuals who have personally battled cancer also reached out, offering hope and practical advice. 'You got this. I'm a stage 4 survivor. It can be done,' one such message read. Throughout his illustrious career, Taylor forged a reputation as a fearless warrior, securing 52 victories including 37 knockouts and capturing multiple titles across various weight divisions. Now, the consensus from those who know him best is unmistakable: the Bulli Blaster is not about to surrender. 'Just another one to beat. Stay strong mate,' another supporter affirmed.
