Lerone Murphy Makes Frank Admission Despite Theories Around UFC London Fight
Murphy and Evloev will clash in the main event, but will the winner secure a shot at featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski?
Murphy's Candid Assessment of Title Shot Prospects
Lerone Murphy has openly admitted that his upcoming UFC London main event against Movsar Evloev may not necessarily function as a definitive number one contender's fight, despite theories circulating among numerous figures within the mixed martial arts community. On 21 March, Manchester's own Murphy will face the Russian competitor in a highly anticipated battle between two undefeated featherweights, with reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski expressing keen interest in facing the victor.
Naturally, many fans and pundits have been quick to label the UFC London main event as a title eliminator bout, given both Murphy and Evloev's impressive undefeated records and Volkanovski's publicly stated desire to compete against either man. However, the path to a championship opportunity in the UFC is not always straightforward, as Murphy emphasised on Monday shortly after the fight announcement.
"Nothing's concrete," Murphy stated during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. Nevertheless, he added with conviction, "But I hope so. The matchmakers understand what type of match-up this represents. Everyone recognises what kind of fight this is going to be, and the calibre of fighter I'm facing. Therefore, I believe the winner should undeniably be next in line for the title. It's simple."
Analysing the Match-Up and Fighter Strategies
Murphy, who will enter the O2 Arena with an impressive professional record of 17 wins, 0 losses, and 1 draw, offered his assessment of the 19-0 Evloev. "Movsar is elite. He's a very good fighter, competent everywhere, but I just believe I'm going to take him into deep waters," Murphy explained. He outlined his tactical approach, stating, "It's going to involve defensive wrestling, an ambitious offence, and applying pressure to force him into a mistake. I'll be hunting for the knockout from the opening bell until the final bell."
News of this compelling match-up emerged just two days after Alexander Volkanovski successfully extended his second reign as featherweight champion with a victory over Diego Lopes. Volkanovski outpointed Lopes to retain the title in the main event of UFC 325, which occurred nine months after he defeated the Brazilian in a similar manner to claim the vacant championship belt.
Volkanovski's Call-Out and Murphy's Response
The Australian champion utilised his post-fight press conference to explicitly call for a future bout against either Murphy, aged 34, or Evloev, aged 31. Murphy responded to this call-out, revealing, "It hurt watching that fight, thinking I should have been there. It should have been me. I believe if I was in that Octagon, I would have gotten the job done. I observed numerous aspects where I would have implemented different strategies. I feel, at this moment, that I'm the best featherweight in the world."
Murphy continued, expressing respect for the champion, "Volk is the individual I hold the utmost respect for as a champion. If the decision were solely his, he would have fought me, and he's actively seeking to face the next best contender. That's how every champion should conduct themselves. I hope I get the opportunity to share the Octagon with him."
Recent Form and Fighter Histories
Murphy last competed in August, facing UFC debutant Aaron Pico. The British fighter stopped the former Bellator star in spectacular fashion with a spinning back elbow, a performance that prompted Volkanovski to publicly call for a title defence against Murphy. Meanwhile, Movsar Evloev has not fought since December 2024, when he secured a narrow points victory over Aljamain Sterling, a former UFC bantamweight champion.
This main event promises to be a pivotal moment in the featherweight division, with both undefeated fighters seeking to solidify their claim for a championship opportunity against one of the sport's most dominant champions.
