Frank Warren has dismissed claims that an injury could stop Tyson Fury from fighting Anthony Joshua, calling the rumours "absolute nonsense". The long-time promoter's denial follows allegations from Frank Bruno about what he was told regarding the 'Gypsy King'.
The world heavyweight title fight on Netflix is now barely a month away after being announced in late September. The all-British bout is scheduled for 11 December at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Both Fury and Joshua are in camp training for the fight, with rumours now swirling about how they are faring.
Bruno's Comments and Warren's Response
Speaking on Fight Your Corner, former heavyweight champion Bruno said: "I looked at him the other day and I think someone was talking to me in the gym that he's got some injury, which may stop him from going into the fight with Anthony Joshua? And having that on your head ain't nice."
Those claims were put to Warren at the final press conference for Saturday's rematch between Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson. Speaking to The Sun, he said: "Nonsense, nonsense, absolute nonsense".
Warren added: "He's doing well." However, he did acknowledge: "I haven't spoken to him for a week."
Fury's Focus and Wilder's Undercard Role
The promoter does not plan to change that either, even in light of the injury rumours. Warren said: "I'll leave him alone, leave him in peace. The last time I spoke to him, he just said I wish the fight were tomorrow. He's so up for it, he's so focused, and he wants it so badly."
The focus extends to avoiding distraction in Cardiff from the addition of Deontay Wilder to the undercard, with whom Fury fought a trilogy. Asked about the Bronze Bomber's fight with two-time cruiserweight world champion Jai Opetia, Warren said: "No, it won't affect Tyson whatsoever."
Fury, however, has already had his say, telling Michelle Joy Phelps on Behind The Mic: "Silly really, for Deontay's part. He shouldn't be in a ring; he should be nowhere near a ring. It's a crying shame that this man has to continue to fight when he's shot to bits. He never should have fought again after I beat him – the last time. That should have been the end of it. But… Needs must. If you're getting knocked out by people you should be knocking out yourself, then…" Fury also said that Wilder "looked shockingly terrible" against Derek Chisora.
