Former heavyweight boxing sensation Butterbean has shared a jaw-dropping behind-the-scenes story about the time he accidentally sent Jackass star Johnny Knoxville flying into unconsciousness during a stunt gone wrong.
In a recent interview, the retired fighter, famous for his explosive power, admitted he didn’t hold back when Knoxville insisted on taking a real punch for the cameras. The result? A full-force knockout that left the Jackass crew scrambling.
The Infamous Knockout
Butterbean, whose real name is Eric Esch, recalled the chaotic moment. "Johnny wanted it to look real, so I gave him a real shot," he said. "Next thing I know, he’s out cold, and everyone’s freaking out."
The stunt, filmed for Jackass: The Movie, was supposed to be a comedic boxing match. But when Butterbean’s fist connected, Knoxville hit the deck—hard. "I thought I’d killed him," Butterbean admitted. "Thankfully, he woke up a few seconds later, laughing."
Knoxville’s Fearless Approach
Known for his reckless bravery, Knoxville has endured countless injuries for entertainment. But even by his standards, taking a punch from Butterbean—a man with 77 KOs in his career—was next-level insanity.
"Most people would run from Butterbean," said a Jackass crew member. "Johnny ran toward him. That’s just how he is."
Butterbean’s Legacy
Butterbean, now 57, retired from boxing in 2013 but remains a cult figure in combat sports. His raw power and larger-than-life persona made him a fan favourite—and a nightmare for anyone daring enough to step in the ring with him.
As for Knoxville? He walked away with another wild story—and probably a headache.
