Great Britain and Northern Ireland finished second in the medal table at the European Athletics Championships, held for the first time in the competition's history at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The host nation secured 19 medals, including nine golds, finishing one gold behind winners Italy.
Among the GB squad were several of Wales' best athletes, who played their part in the impressive total. Here is a roundup of the performances from the Welsh contingent.
Charlotte Henrich's breakthrough
Charlotte Henrich has enjoyed a breakthrough season, taking over a second off her personal best, which now stands at 50.45 seconds. The 19-year-old's European Championship experience was eventful.
As part of GB's 4x400 mixed relay squad, Henrich, alongside Ben Jeffries, Toby Harries and Yemi Mary John, secured the home crowd's first medal of the championships on the opening night. In the individual 400m, she narrowly missed out on a final spot with a run of 50.51 seconds, but advanced after a late injury to team-mate Amber Anning, finishing sixth in 51.29 seconds. Her week ended watching the women's 4x400m team win silver, having run in the qualifying round.
Jeremiah Azu's medal haul
Jeremiah Azu collected medals throughout the championships. He took silver in the men's 100m, finishing behind fellow countryman Romell Glave. In the men's 4x100m relay, Azu, alongside Glave, Zharnel Hughes and Louie Hinchcliffe, won gold, with Azu providing the quick start. On the final evening, he repeated the feat in the mixed 4x100m relay, a new event at the championships, partnering with Hughes, Dina Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt to take another gold.
Marathon team gold
Natasha Wilson played her part in a team gold in the women's marathon, finishing fifth overall in 2:27.54. Louise Small, Rose Harvey and Clara Evans-Graham were the other GB athletes in the team that secured top spot.
Evans-Graham finished 34th in 2:40.01, describing the course as "really tough".
Heyward's return and Jones's qualification
Jake Heyward returned to the track this summer after two years out following double Achilles surgery. The 2022 European silver medallist was in good form, having set a new Welsh mile record in July and finishing fourth at the Commonwealth Games. Despite leading into the final straight of the men's 1500m final, he missed a medal by under two hundredths of a second, finishing fourth.
Freya Jones competed in the women's javelin qualification, but her best mark of 53.93m was not enough to advance, finishing 11th in group A.
