Jose Mourinho has said he would not receive the same patience at Real Madrid that Mikel Arteta has been given at Arsenal. The 63-year-old returned to the Bernabeu in the summer after a spell with Benfica.
Since Mourinho's first spell in charge, Real Madrid have had nine different managers, although both Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane have had multiple stints. Arsenal, by contrast, have had only three managers in that time: Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery and Arteta.
Arteta's new contract
Arteta signed a new contract with Arsenal until 2030. Mourinho believes such an arrangement would not be possible at his current club.
"Yesterday, I read something interesting that would not happen at Real Madrid," Mourinho said. "Mikel Arteta renewed his contract and said something like 'we are still starting' and 'this is just the beginning' and he has been there for years. The demands here are just different."
Rice praises Arteta
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice also commented on Arteta's new deal. Speaking to ESPN Brazil, he praised the manager's attention to detail.
"It's just tactically, training, managing, the detail he goes into, the things he sees that you would never see," Rice said. "He's constantly watching you when you don't think you're being watched. He's watching, constantly asking questions to try and catch you out, to see if you're listening. He's always keeping you on your toes, making sure that you're ready."
Rice added: "Every time we go into games, tactically we know what we're doing. Defensively, with the ball, how we're going to beat the opposition. It's just the fine details, the way he breaks everything down, which makes him the best for me. It's amazing that he [Arteta] signed a new contract and we get to have him as our manager for the next four years. So, we'll be very lucky."
Upcoming clash
Arteta and Mourinho will face each other later this season when Arsenal host Real Madrid in a Champions League match in December. The pair have met three times before, with Mourinho winning two of those meetings. The most recent clash, in March 2021, went in Arteta and Arsenal's favour.
