Keely Hodgkinson Obliterates 24-Year-Old Indoor 800m World Record

In a breathtaking display of speed and endurance, Britain's Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson has demolished the world indoor 800m record, which had stood for nearly a quarter of a century. The 23-year-old athlete clocked an astonishing time of 1:54.88 at a meeting in Liévin, France, shattering the previous mark of 1:55.82 set by Slovenia's Jolanda Ceplak on 3 March 2002—the very day Hodgkinson was born.

A Record Long in the Making

Hodgkinson had openly targeted this record for weeks, following a preparatory race at the British championships. Her confidence proved well-founded as she dominated a high-quality field that included Ethiopia's Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma and Switzerland's European Under-23 champion Audrey Werro. After the race, a breathless Hodgkinson exclaimed, "Thank God! That was really fun. I've been looking forward to this for a good few weeks." She also expressed gratitude to the packed stadium, noting, "I had lots of help today."

Overcoming Adversity to Achieve Greatness

This record-breaking performance marks a triumphant comeback for Hodgkinson, who faced significant setbacks in the past year. She had initially planned to break the record at her own event, the Keely Klassic, in Birmingham last February but suffered a hamstring injury on the eve of the race. Further issues arose after an eight-hour round trip to Windsor Palace to collect an MBE, affecting her hamstring and back. Despite these challenges, she managed to secure a bronze medal at the world championships in Tokyo in September, though it was clear she was not at peak form.

However, Hodgkinson has started the indoor season in superb condition. During the record run, she passed the halfway point in 55.56 seconds and the 600m mark in 1:25.06, maintaining her pace to break the record by 0.88 seconds. World Athletics now refers to this as the short-track record, adding another prestigious achievement to her already impressive career.

Building an Extraordinary Athletic Legacy

Hodgkinson's CV now boasts an Olympic gold medal, multiple silvers, and a bronze at world championships, making this indoor record another remarkable milestone. Looking ahead, she has set her sights on the world indoor championships in Torun, Poland, next month, aiming to claim one of the few medals that has eluded her so far. Reflecting on her motivation, Hodgkinson stated, "I've been very vocal about wanting to break it. I feel like it's my record to take because it was set on the exact day I was born."

This performance not only cements her status as one of Britain's top athletes but also signals her readiness for upcoming competitions, promising more thrilling moments in the world of athletics.
