Former Premier League footballer James Milner was among the 50,000 runners to complete the New York City marathon on Sunday, finishing in 3 hours 9 minutes.
The race, which takes place annually on the first Sunday of November, is one of the closest global competitors to the London marathon. Almost 60,000 people ran last year's event in the UK capital, while the New York race attracts more than two million spectators. At least a fifth of runners are said to come from outside the US to take part.
Course and route
The marathon route takes in all five boroughs of New York City. It starts at Staten Island, where runners cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn. They then run north to Queens before using the Queensboro Bridge to head into Manhattan.
Runners continue north towards The Bronx, where the thousands of participants turn to head back south through Harlem and Central Park, finishing the 26.2-mile course.
