Former England youth international James Walker has died at the age of 38, seven years after suffering a cardiac arrest that changed his life. His former club Southend United confirmed the news and announced a minute's applause tribute ahead of their next match.
Cardiac arrest in 2019 and long recovery
Walker's life changed in 2019 when he suffered a cardiac arrest, leaving him with serious physical and mental impairments. He was said to be demonstrating a somersault to his PE class when the heart issue stopped blood flow to his brain. He spent 15 days in a coma and, despite some recovery, required assistance in a 24-hour care home in Southend.
He saw some progress in rehabilitation before suffering another cardiac arrest in November last year, which dramatically impacted his mobility, though he regained some consciousness and hearing. Walker died on 19 September, with his funeral arranged for 28 October in Southend.
Career and tributes
Walker came through Charlton Athletic's academy and represented England at under-17 level. He went on to play for Leyton Orient, Southend United, Hartlepool United, Bristol Rovers, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Gillingham. His most successful spell came at Southend, where he made 54 appearances between 2008 and 2010, scoring eight goals.
Southend United released an official statement saying: "Southend United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player James Walker at the age of 38." The club added: "On Saturday we will be conducting a minutes applause in his honour ahead of kick-off. Rest in peace, James."
Support from ex-players and clubs
In May 2023, the Southend United Ex-Player Association (SUEPA) organised a benefit match to raise funds for Walker's recovery. Steve Tilson and Paul Brush led a Southend United Legends team in support. SUEPA announced his passing in a social media post, saying he "passed away peacefully in his sleep on 19th September" and that his funeral will be on 28 October.
Yeovil Town also paid tribute, saying: "Everyone at Yeovil Town Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Glover James Walker, aged 38." James made 13 appearances for the Glovers during his loan spell from Charlton Athletic, scoring three goals.
