Scottish long-distance runner and Olympian Eilish McColgan has revealed she was subjected to horrific racial abuse after announcing her engagement to her coach, Michael Rimmer.
The 32-year-old athlete, who has represented Team GB at multiple Olympic Games, shared screenshots of the vile messages she received on social media, describing them as 'disgusting'.
McColgan, whose mother Liz is also a former Olympic medallist, posted a heartfelt message condemning the abuse while thanking her supporters for their kindness.
Outpouring of Support
The athletics community has rallied behind McColgan, with fellow runners and fans condemning the racist remarks. Many have praised her courage in speaking out against online harassment.
McColgan's fiancé, Michael Rimmer - himself a former British 800m champion - has been vocal in his support, calling the abuse 'unacceptable in any circumstance'.
A Promising Career
The incident comes as McColgan prepares for upcoming competitions, having recently recovered from injury. The Scottish star holds multiple national records and is considered one of Britain's brightest middle-distance prospects.
This isn't the first time McColgan has faced online abuse, having previously spoken about the mental health impact of social media trolling on elite athletes.
