DWP confirms 71 neurological conditions for £748 PIP

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the full list of 71 neurological conditions that could qualify for financial support totalling a maximum of £748 per month.

People living with certain neurological conditions that impact their independence are eligible for the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which could see up to an additional £187 in bank accounts each week.

There are currently a total of 512,212 qualifying PIP claims for these 71 neurological conditions, according to the latest DWP data.

How PIP is structured

PIP is a disability benefit paid to those with long-term physical or mental health conditions, disabilities, or learning difficulties. It supports those who need help with daily living tasks, particularly people of State Pension age who want to maintain their independence at home.

The disability benefit is not a single flat rate - instead, it is divided into two parts based on how a claimant's condition affects their independence.

The daily living component covers the extra costs of managing everyday tasks. The standard rate is set at £76.55 per week, while the enhanced rate provides £114.80.

Mobility component and maximum payment

The mobility component addresses the challenges of getting around. The base rate for this component is £30.20, with an increased level of £80.10.

By qualifying for the enhanced daily living rate and a portion of the mobility support, eligible claimants can see their weekly total reach the £187 mark - totalling £748 per month.

Full list of qualifying conditions

The DWP currently identifies 71 neurological conditions as qualifying criteria, though officials emphasise that this list is not exhaustive. Rather than a specific diagnosis, the department focuses on how the condition impacts the claimant's quality of life and ability to complete daily routines.

The DWP list of neurological conditions that could qualify for PIP claims, along with the number of claimants, includes:

  • Cerebrovascular accident (stroke) - 84,022
  • Multiple sclerosis - 57,941
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) - 34,466
  • Neurological disorders - Other / type not known - 34,499
  • Parkinson's disease - 16,726

Other conditions on the list include epilepsy, migraine, cerebral palsy, motor neurone disease, Huntington's disease, and various neuropathies, among others.
