A high-ranking British diplomat stationed in Washington has unexpectedly vacated his position. James Roscoe, who served as deputy head of mission at the British Embassy since 2022, has left his post without any official explanation provided thus far.
Interim Ambassador Role
Mr Roscoe previously acted as interim ambassador following the dismissal of Lord Peter Mandelson, who was removed due to his connections to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Although Roscoe was considered a strong candidate for the top diplomatic role, the position ultimately went to Sir Christian Turner.
Key Diplomatic Engagements
As chargé d’affaires to the United States, Mr Roscoe played a pivotal role during Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom in September 2025. More recently, as the embassy’s second-in-command, he was involved in the King’s state visit to the US, which commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Previous Career Highlights
Before his Washington posting, Mr Roscoe served as the UK ambassador to the United Nations. He also held the position of communications chief to the late Queen Elizabeth II and was chief press officer in Downing Street under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. His earlier diplomatic assignments included postings to the UN, Sierra Leone, and Iraq.
In a brief statement, a Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed: “James Roscoe has left his post.”
