Inside Vladimir Putin's Secret Love Life: From Gymnasts to Teenage Pin-Ups
Vladimir Putin's Secret Love Life: Gymnasts, Teen Pin-Ups

The Secret World of Vladimir Putin's Romantic Affairs

Vladimir Putin's approach to international relations has often been characterised by a ruthless determination to seize what he desires, regardless of ownership or consequence. This same principle appears to extend into his personal life, where a web of clandestine relationships and alleged infidelities has been meticulously concealed from public view.

A Marriage of Convenience and Concealment

Putin, now 73 years old, was legally married to Lyudmila Shkrebneva for three decades, from 1983 until their highly publicised divorce in 2013. Throughout much of this period, his private life remained shrouded in secrecy, protected by the formidable apparatus of the Russian state. However, persistent whispers, dissident reports, and fearless journalism have gradually peeled back the layers, revealing a carousel of glamorous young women linked to the powerful leader.

Reports of Putin's infidelity during the latter years of his marriage were widespread, but the complexity of his private affairs involved not just hiding mistresses from his wife, but also managing multiple illicit relationships simultaneously. From teenage models summoned to his private chambers to a former cleaner transformed into a multi-millionaire, the secrets of Putin's romantic life paint a picture of calculated discretion and immense privilege.

The Long-Term Gymnast: Alina Kabaeva

Foremost among Putin's alleged long-term partners is Alina Kabaeva, a gold medal-winning Olympic gymnast once celebrated as Russia's most flexible woman. Now 42, Kabaeva has been romantically linked to Putin for approximately two decades, maintaining her position even as other mistresses reportedly came and went. She is widely believed to be the mother of Putin's two sons, born in 2015 and 2019.

The relationship first entered the public domain in 2008 when a Russian newspaper exposed the secret affair, indicating that Putin had been cheating on his then-wife Lyudmila with the athlete for at least five years. Putin responded furiously, accusing reporters of sticking their 'snot-ridden noses' into his private matters. The publication was swiftly raided, its editor forced out, and the newspaper shut down entirely.

Recent investigations suggest the relationship may have begun much earlier. Evidence emerged that Kabaeva received secret payments from a military unit connected to Putin in the year 2000, when she was only 17 years old. In 2004, towards the end of her gymnastics career, she posed for a provocative front-page shoot in Maxim magazine, described by the photographer as 'full of sex'.

A darker chapter involves the death of Kabaeva's former boyfriend, singer Murat Nasyrov, who fell from a fifth-floor balcony in 2007. Officially ruled a suicide, this narrative has been heavily disputed. No traces of drugs or alcohol were found in his system, and close associates insisted he was not depressed and had never contemplated suicide, leading to suspicions of foul play.

Just last week, a new investigation by FBK, the organisation founded by the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny, claimed Kabaeva acquired £63 million in surplus funds following the construction of Putin's billion-pound palace.

The Teenage Pin-Up: Alisa Kharcheva

Perhaps the most scandalous of Putin's alleged dalliances involved a teenage pin-up girl, Alisa Kharcheva, who was reportedly summoned to his residence once every fortnight. Putin first noticed Kharcheva at age 17, when she appeared in a widely circulated erotic calendar created for his 58th birthday in 2010.

Produced by students linked to the Nashi youth movement, the calendar featured young women posing suggestively in lingerie and was printed 50,000 times, sold across Russia for around six euros. Recent revelations indicate Putin received not only the calendar but also the contact details of all the models pictured.

Kharcheva, who posed as Miss April, is said to have been invited to the Kremlin repeatedly while Putin was still married. A 2023 book, The Tsar Himself by journalists Roman Badanin and Mikhail Rubin, notes: 'What went on in the Kremlin’s alcoves between a 58-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl only they know.' Her visits were allegedly scheduled for when Kabaeva was away, meaning Putin was cheating on his long-term lover while also deceiving his wife.

Kharcheva later enrolled at the prestigious Moscow Institute of International Relations, known for training future diplomats. In 2012, she posted a blog entitled 'Pussy for Putin', featuring a photo with a kitten and praising the president's leadership. Eyebrows were raised when she was discovered living in a luxurious apartment in one of Moscow's most exclusive districts, with investigations tracing the property to one of Putin's trusted associates.

The Cleaner Turned Millionaire: Svetlana Krigonovikh

By the time Putin divorced Lyudmila in 2013, he was already rumoured to have fathered a secret child with Svetlana Krigonovikh, now 50. She is believed to have first caught Putin's eye in 1999 while working as a shop cleaner.

The Pandora Papers and other leaks reveal she abruptly amassed enormous wealth in the early 2000s, acquiring a penthouse in St Petersburg, properties in Moscow, a luxury yacht, and other assets totalling an estimated £75 million. Her portfolio also included ownership of a strip club and a £3.1 million apartment in Monaco—a rise inconceivable on a cleaner's wages.

In 2003, Krigonovikh gave birth to a daughter, Elizaveta (Luiza), now a 22-year-old art graduate living in Paris and widely rumoured to be Putin's lovechild. Luiza was recently confronted by protesters demanding accountability for her alleged father's actions, and she emphatically denounced him.

The 'Barbie Lover': Ekaterina Mizulina

The most recent woman linked to Putin is British-educated Ekaterina 'Katya' Mizulina, dubbed his 'Barbie lover'. Now 41, she is the daughter of pro-Putin senator Yelena Mizulina and philosopher Mikhail Mizulin, destined for a public career from an early age. After graduating from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 2004, she became director of Russia's 'Safe Internet League', effectively the Kremlin's censorship apparatus.

Speculation about a relationship with Putin surged in 2024, though no concrete evidence has emerged. In 2023, she made headlines by litigating against Russian celebrities who attended a 'nearly naked' party in Moscow.

The Long-Suffering Wife: Lyudmila Shkrebneva

The only relationship Putin has ever publicly acknowledged is with his ex-wife, Lyudmila Shkrebneva. They met conventionally at a concert in the Soviet era, marrying in 1983 and having two daughters. Lyudmila worked as a university German teacher and telecoms representative until Putin became prime minister in 1999.

As First Lady, she avoided the limelight, appearing only when protocol demanded. Rumours about their marriage intensified over the years, fueled by stories of Putin's infidelity, until they announced their separation on camera during a Kremlin ballet performance. Lyudmila has reportedly remarried businessman Artur Ocheretny, seeking a quieter life away from the scrutiny that defined her years with Putin.

This intricate tapestry of relationships underscores a pattern of behaviour where power and secrecy intertwine, shielding the personal affairs of one of the world's most formidable leaders from full public accountability.
