Hansi Flick has demonstrated his strict disciplinary approach by dropping Marcus Rashford from the starting lineup for Barcelona's La Liga clash against Getafe, after the Manchester United loanee arrived late to training. The decision came just days after Rashford scored a brace, including a stunning long-range winner, in Barcelona's Champions League victory over Newcastle.
Rashford was introduced as a substitute in the second half and provided an assist for Dani Olmo's goal in Barcelona's 3-0 win. However, his exclusion from the starting XI underscores Flick's no-nonsense policy, which has previously seen defenders Jules Kounde and Raphinha benched for similar infractions.
Flick had already set the precedent last season, warning his squad that punctuality is a matter of respect. "It's not that difficult to show up and do your job," he said at the time. "It's not just about me, but about respect for the players and everyone else."
Despite the disciplinary action, Flick praised Rashford's response and highlighted his preference for a central role. "We decided to bring Marcus in. He can also play on the right, but I think he prefers to play as a number 11 or as a number 9," the Barcelona coach said after the match.
Rashford's loan move to Barcelona has revitalised his form, a stark contrast to his struggles at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, where he also impressed in the Champions League, before joining Barcelona in the summer.
The in-form forward will aim to continue his strong performances when Barcelona face Oviedo on Thursday night.
