Donald Trump has been branded the 'world's biggest joke' after a gaffe during a press interview where he referred to California Governor Gavin Newsom as 'the President of the United States'. The blunder came amid rising tensions in the Middle East, with the US President facing criticism over his handling of the Iran conflict.
The clip, shared by social media user Jay's World, shows Trump mistakenly calling Newsom 'President' while sitting behind the Resolute Desk in the White House. Since being posted, the video has garnered over 30,000 views and sparked widespread mockery online. One commenter said: 'The world's biggest joke.'
Trump also faced backlash for remarks about Newsom's dyslexia, a learning condition affecting up to one in five Americans. The President mocked Newsom's reading and spelling difficulties, calling him 'dumb'. Newsom, a potential Democratic presidential challenger, has previously spoken about his dyslexia.
Critics were quick to point out the irony of Trump criticising learning disabilities while making a basic error. One observer noted: 'The President just got confused about who the President is while complaining that the President shouldn't have learning disabilities.' Another described Trump as a 'bully' reminiscent of a 'rich spoiled brat'.
This is not the first time Trump has faced controversy this week. Last week, he was accused of spreading falsehoods about the Iran conflict. The latest gaffe has only added to perceptions of incompetence, with many questioning his fitness for office.
