Deputy Labour Leader Angela Rayner unleashed a furious broadside against Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions, branding his government a "dumping ground for gimmicks and chaos" in the wake of significant budget leaks.
The fiery session in the House of Commons saw Rayner seize on reports that the Treasury is considering a new 99% mortgage scheme, a move that has sparked concerns about potentially inflating house prices and burdening buyers with debt.
A Government in Disarray
Rayner didn't hold back, accusing the Chancellor and the Prime Minister of presiding over a "dysfunctional circus." She pointed to the leaked plans as evidence of a government that is utterly out of touch and incapable of basic competence.
"They have lost all control," she declared from the despatch box, highlighting the stark contrast between the Conservatives' record and Labour's plans for a renewed focus on affordable housebuilding.
Sunak's Defence and Rayner's Riposte
In response, a visibly flustered PM Sunak attempted to deflect, reiterating the government's track record and avoiding direct comment on the specific leaks. He instead touted the government's economic plan, claiming it was "working."
Rayner, however, was quick to counter. She dismissed Sunak's retort as predictable and empty, stating that the British public had grown weary of a party more focused on internal squabbles and media leaks than on governing effectively.
"This is a government that is not just out of ideas, but out of time," she concluded, to loud cheers from the Labour benches.
The heated exchange sets the stage for Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's Spring Budget next week, which is now shrouded in controversy and heightened scrutiny following the premature revelations.
