California Governor Gavin Newsom has mocked Donald Trump as 'Dozy Don' after the US president appeared to close his eyes during a Board of Peace meeting in Washington, D.C.
At Thursday's inaugural event, Trump announced $7 billion in pledges from member nations for a Gaza reconstruction fund and said the US would contribute $10 billion. However, attention shifted when social media users accused Trump of falling asleep or appearing tired during an official's speech.
Newsom's press office shared a clip showing Trump with eyes closed, captioning it: 'That's not a still photo of Dozy Don. He's really just asleep.' Former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger posted: 'Poor low energy Donald. He's tuckered out.' The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump group, shared a still photo with the words 'Bored of Peace'.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly defended Trump, calling him 'the sharpest, most accessible, and energetic president in American history' and accused Newsom's team of pushing 'baseless conspiracy theories' while Trump secures world peace.
Newsom, a front-runner for the 2028 Democratic nomination, has frequently criticised Trump on social media, often mimicking Trump's all-caps style and signing posts with his initials. At the World Economic Forum in Davos last month, he said: 'This is not normal... I put a mirror up to Trump and Trumpism – in all caps.'
