Labour Civil War Erupts Over Chancellor Pick Amid Leadership Race
Labour Civil War Over Chancellor Pick

A Labour civil war was brewing on Thursday as several Cabinet ministers scrambled to be appointed Chancellor by Andy Burnham if he becomes Prime Minister. Rachel Reeves's top aide urged some of Britain's biggest companies and trade associations to lobby Mr Burnham to keep her as Chancellor, it has emerged, after reports she faces the sack.

Miliband and Others in the Running

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is also said to be gunning for the role, but his bid could be thwarted by trade unions, who have questioned his zeal for net zero's impact on the top Treasury job. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have also been thrown into the ring.

Starmer's Resignation Triggers Race

Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, days after the former Manchester mayor was elected as the MP for Makerfield. The leadership contest has sparked intense jostling among senior figures, with the Chancellor position seen as a key prize.

According to sources, Reeves's team has been actively courting business leaders to secure her position. One insider said: "Rachel has done a good job stabilising the economy, and many in the business community want her to stay." However, Burnham's camp has indicated he wants to bring in his own team, potentially sidelining Reeves.

Trade unions have expressed concerns about Miliband's commitment to net zero, with one union leader stating: "Ed's green agenda could hurt working people if not managed carefully. We need a Chancellor who prioritises jobs."

The contest is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with candidates making their pitches to Labour MPs and party members. The winner will be announced at the party's annual conference in September.
