Jurgen Klopp has cautioned Liverpool that finding a direct replacement for Mohamed Salah will be nearly impossible, urging the club not to 'chase shadows' as the Egyptian prepares to leave Anfield this summer. Salah's contract expires at the end of the season, bringing an end to his eight-year stint on Merseyside.
The 33-year-old forward has made 441 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 257 goals and providing 122 assists. Since joining in 2017, he has become a club legend and fan favourite. Speculation over his successor has included names such as West Ham's Jarrod Bowen, RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, and Bayern Munich's Michael Olise.
Speaking earlier this year after confirmation of Salah's departure, Klopp said: 'If it is impossible, why should you try? Don't try to chase the shadows. Find a new way and play.' He added: 'I would not be surprised if he plays another six or seven years. He is an all-time great. This specific kind of player is irreplaceable.'
Klopp acknowledged that Salah could be difficult when not scoring, saying: 'Great team-mate, great guy – but not great company when he's not scoring. Special players are a challenge, but we never lost respect for each other.'
Salah recently took to social media after Liverpool's 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, appearing to criticise manager Arne Slot. He wrote: 'Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful... I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear.'
