King Charles and Sophie in High Spirits at Royal Windsor Horse Show

King Charles III and the Duchess of Edinburgh were seen in excellent spirits at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in Berkshire. The royal family attended the second day of the prestigious equestrian event on Friday, which runs until Sunday, May 17.

King Charles Celebrates Victory

The King wore a grey suit and green tie as he smiled broadly in the Castle arena. Some images captured him throwing his hands in the air after his horse won. He also made various facial expressions while watching the equestrian action.

Duchess Sophie Braving the Cold

The Duchess of Edinburgh was photographed sheltering from cool temperatures inside a buggy, wearing three layers of outerwear. Despite the chilly weather, Sophie maintained her characteristic good spirits and was seen smiling throughout her visit. She also shared a laugh with her daughter in a rare public appearance by the young royal.

Lady Louise Windsor's Rare Appearance

Lady Louise Windsor, 22, King Charles's niece, was present but working behind the scenes at her part-time job. She beamed in photographs as she strolled through the showground after completing her English degree at the University of St Andrews. Wearing practical tall brown boots and a long checkered skirt, she looked professional with her official blue badge bearing her full name, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor. Louise is not a working royal, so the four-day event offers a rare opportunity to see her in public; she is understood to be competing later in the week.

Princess Anne and Prince Edward

Princess Anne was also present, seen in conversation with jockey Katie Jerram Hunnable after her triumph aboard First Receiver in the RoR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show series qualifier. Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, was spotted examining a 1966 Land Rover Series IIa, a vehicle once used by the late Queen Elizabeth II. The classic Land Rover serves as a reminder of the late monarch's fondness for British-made vehicles.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show

The show is a popular event among royals and was said to be the late Queen Elizabeth II's favourite on the royal calendar. Her connection to the show dates back to its inception in May 1943 as the Windsor Horse and Dog Show. It is the only time of year the private grounds of Windsor Castle are open to the public. The event's website describes it as a week of top-level international equestrian competition across Show Jumping, Driving, and Endurance, culminating in the Rolex Grand Prix on Sunday, along with four arenas of showing classes, military displays, and a country lifestyle shopping village.

Queen Camilla's Subtle Gesture

Queen Camilla, who was not seen at the equestrian event on Thursday, recently delighted royal fans with a subtle attempt to get King Charles to hurry along during the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday. Video footage captured her tapping her husband's arm to signal he needed to end a conversation. Camilla then strode ahead of Charles, who was preoccupied with placing his State Admiral of the Fleet Royal Navy cap on his head. The comical moment delighted fans on X, who quipped that Camilla was 'telling the King to get a move on!'

Charles and Camilla attended the State Opening of Parliament to set out the government's priorities in the King's Speech. The monarch said the Government will take urgent action to tackle antisemitism and defend British values. The King's Speech ran to 1,285 words, one of the longest this century, and contained 37 Bills.
