A preliminary federal investigation report has revealed that a small aircraft carrying five passengers to a pickleball tournament near Austin, Texas, broke apart midair last month after encountering problems with freezing instruments.
Crash Details and Victims
The Cessna 421C departed from Amarillo on April 30 at 9:10 p.m. and crashed approximately two hours later near Wimberley, a city located about 40 miles southwest of Austin. The pilot, Justin Appling, and passengers Hayden Dillard, Brooke Skypala, Stacy Hedrick, and Seren Wilson all perished in the incident.
Instrument Icing and Pilot Reports
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report, the pilot reported issues with the plane's anti-icing system, which is designed to protect onboard instruments. He subsequently informed air traffic controllers that the airspeed indicator had become iced over and that he was relying on backup gauges. The pilot was cleared to descend to 4,000 feet and expressed a desire to reach a lower altitude to "warm back up." Throughout the final 15 minutes of the flight, the aircraft operated at altitudes where temperatures hovered just below freezing.
Final Moments and Debris Field
The pilot's last radio transmission occurred at 10:59 p.m. Following this, the plane executed a series of descending left and right turns before crashing. Investigators discovered aircraft fragments scattered across a debris field spanning 1.25 miles, a distribution pattern consistent with an "inflight breakup," as stated in the report.
Weather Conditions and Second Aircraft
The National Weather Service reported mostly cloudy skies in the area shortly before the crash, with a thunderstorm occurring two hours later. A second plane traveling with the group managed to land safely in New Braunfels.
