Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has used St George's Day to issue a robust defence of the English flag, declaring it stands for 'decency not division'. In a statement released on Wednesday, he condemned those who hijack national symbols to spread hate, labelling such actions 'plastic patriotism'.
Starmer warned that Britain faces a dual test from hostile foreign actors and domestic agitators exploiting division. He drew a sharp distinction between the 'mindless minority' who brought violence to the streets and the majority who represent the best of the nation.
The Prime Minister outlined his vision of 'quiet patriotism', rooted in community contribution and mutual support. He announced a £5.8 billion 'Pride in Place' programme targeting 379 deprived areas, alongside a Social Cohesion Action Plan to strengthen community ties.
'I know what the flag of St George stands for,' Starmer said. 'It stands for decency over division. Unity over hate. And a country where patriotism is measured by what you put in, not what hate you stir up.'
