Jarrod Bowen has been linked with a move away from West Ham United this summer, with the forward's childhood admission of supporting Manchester United adding fuel to the speculation. The 29-year-old winger, who has scored 85 goals since joining the Hammers in 2020, could be part of a mass exodus following the club's relegation from the Premier League.
West Ham Relegation Triggers Financial Crisis
Despite a 3-0 victory over Leeds United on the final day of the season, West Ham were relegated after Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 win against Everton. The drop to the Championship is expected to create a £100 million hole in the club's finances, prompting a potential clearout of key players. Bowen, whose contract runs until 2030, is considered a prime candidate to leave.
Bowen's Manchester United Connection
In June 2022, Bowen revealed on Sky Sports that he supported Manchester United as a child, specifically idolising club legend David Beckham. Speaking about a photograph of himself as a youngster wearing Beckham's iconic number 7 England shirt, Bowen said: "I followed Manchester United a bit growing up, as well, but I think I more followed him because I thought he was cool." This admission has given Manchester United hope as they reportedly consider a move for the winger, according to the Guardian.
Mixed Signals on Bowen's Future
While Bowen's transfer value remains high, his post-match comments after relegation suggest he may stay with West Ham in the Championship. He stated: "I'm under contract here. I've been here six and a half years. I've had some really high moments and this is a low moment... Ultimately, what I see is getting this club back in the Premier League because that is where it deserves to be."
However, Bowen stopped short of a long-term commitment in an Instagram statement apologising to fans. He wrote: "It's hard to post something like this when all you're feeling is embarrassment and pain... We just weren't good enough. Simple as that. And that's why the season ended the way it did." He added that the club has the desire to bounce back, saying: "This club belongs in the Premier League and deserves to be back there as soon as possible."
What Next for Bowen?
Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick, view Bowen as an attractive target given his Premier League experience and goal-scoring record. The winger's Instagram statement, while emotional, did not explicitly rule out a transfer, leaving the door open for a summer move. West Ham's financial situation may force their hand, but Bowen's desire to help the club return to the top flight could complicate any potential deal.
